The Joëlette was invented in the 1980’s, and has allowed thousands of less abled persons to go out in the countryside for short and long hiking holidays. The association Compostelle 2000 has organised several pilgrimages to Santiago with Joëlettes. Usually, the Joëlette is handled by two people (photo number 1 site www.hce.asso.fr), or by a donkey and one person. The Randoline and the Joëlette are not comparable. The two machines each have their strong points and weaknesses and the choice between them depends on particular circumstances. Number of accompanying persons : The Joëlette requires a team of 3 to 5 people, because the manipulation demands a great physical effort which cannot be maintained for more than a few km. If a trip of several days was planned it would also necessitate an accompanying car to transport the luggage from one gîte to the next.

If the Joëlette is pulled by a donkey, one person is needed to lead the donkey and another to support the rear of the Joëlette. The Randoline requires just one accompanier, to lead the donkey. This person along with the less-able person can go off in total autonomy. Depending on the physical capabilities, a third accompanier might be necessary. Itinerary : The Joêlette can go just about anywhere on the trails, with its single wheel it doesn’t require a wide path. It’s and all terrain vehicle. The Randoline needs a larger path, with a reasonable surface.
